Betty Miller Gallaher

Betty Miller Gallaher, age 77, of Annandale, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 20, 2023. A private family remembrance will be held in her honor at “The Island.” Betty was born in Pipestone on Oct. 14, 1945 to Eldon and Lucille (Heersma) Miller. She grew up in Pipestone and graduated from Pipestone High School. Betty attended Hamline University and started her career in computer programing in the insurance industry. She married Chuck Coughlen and lived in St. Paul where they started their family. Betty and Chuck divorced in 1977 and Betty moved to Minnetonka to be closer to her current job at Control Data where she became senior manager in their Peripheral Systems Division. Betty married Darryl Gallaher in 1983. Betty purchased the point of Bungalow Island on Clearwater Lake in 1978 as a family getaway and eventually moved out to “The Island” in the late 80’s to get away from the corporate rat race where she and Darryl started a lawn care service. They liked the community so much they eventually bought a house in Annandale. Betty enjoyed being outside in nature, but her MS (multiple sclerosis) made it difficult to continue working outside. Betty got back into computer programming at another insurance company for a few years before retirement doing what she started doing because she had the valuable knowledge of speaking an old programming language that is not taught anymore. Betty enjoyed her Island Garden full of milkweed for the butterflies. She looked forward to her trips with Darryl to New Orleans to experience the food and music. The MS eventually reduced Betty’s mobility to a walker then a wheelchair and the last couple years of COVID-19 shut-in were shared spending time with her love, Darryl. Betty became an avid sports fan, especially her love of the Minnesota Twins and don’t dare interrupt her daily sudoku. Betty is preceded in death by her parents and her sister Vera (Gerry) Demars. Betty is survived by her husband Darryl Gallaher; siblings, Myra (Lowel) Christensen, Dick (Virgie) Miller, Marilyn (John) Oyler, John (Linda) Miller and Ross Welu; children, Bob (Cindy) Coughlen and Kim Stuart; grandchildren, Rose Paque, Rachel Stuart, Cheldon Coughlen, Cal Stuart and Andi Coughlen; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
