By Tom Westman Staff Writer Two Annandale High School students, Ryan Blake and Blake Schneider love to fish. On Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 29 and 30, the two friends headed to Mille Lacs Isle Bay for the North American Ice Fishing Circuit’s (NAIFC) National High School Championship. It was a mixed pan fish tournament where only crappie, perch and blue gills counted. It was Schneider and Blake’s first ice fishing tournament. Fourteen two-person teams competed in the two-day tournament and the Blake-Schneider team placed fourth. Each day all the teams headed out on the ice at 8 a.m. and finished at 3 p.m. for the weigh in. It was a cold day on the lake. On Saturday, it was only -7 degrees at the 8 a.m. start and the temperature only got to five degrees. Saturday was warmer, with temperature reaching 25 degrees. The boys had a portable ice house that helped with the cold. “I had the propane heaters cranked up all day,” Blake said.
